Welcome to Woodkirk Academy

Woodkirk Academy values the diversity and backgrounds of all students and families, and we undertake a variety of events and lessons to celebrate these. 

We have found this approach to be enriching for everyone as it teaches tolerance and respect for the differences in our community and the wider world. Underpinning all of this, are a range of curriculum topics which have strong links to British values.

Assemblies follow a planned sequence involving respect, celebration and collective worship. We underpin all assemblies with traditional values of empathy, respect and tolerance. 

The RE curriculum looks at many aspects of faith and culture and encourages visits from members of non-Christian faiths to promote a wider understanding of non-Christian belief in a traditional Christian based community. 

Geography delves into aspects of population movement and scarcity of resources and the impact both positive and negative that migration can have. 

The History curriculum has a strong focus on the development of Britain through the ages and how we are the society we are today. 

During Black History Month we celebrate Black History, which includes coming together as a whole school to experience and enjoy the diversity of Black African dancing and music.

We also have Anti-Bullying Month in November where year groups are encouraged to work together through the curriculum to look at the nature of bullying and the impact it can have. 

December sees the promotion of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The focus is on liberty and tolerance of others as well as looking at diversity and challenging opinions. The curriculum learning is then brought together through the Pastoral system. 

In February, Woodkirk Academy promotes Fairtrade, educating students and parents to the need for us to buy Fairtrade to help farmers in developing countries to receive a fair price for their produce.

The Student Leadership Group (SLG) is democratically selected with each Form having at least one representative. We have a democratically selected Student Leader and Deputy Leader to represent their own year group. This includes a Junior Head Boy and Girl. We take part in the election of Youth Parliament members and vote on the discussion points for the Youth Parliament debates. Sixth Form Academy Subject Ambassadors are politically active in the local community. Head students are rigorously selected from these Subject Ambassadors.
