Homophobia, biphobia and transphobia are facts of life for LGBT+ young people growing up: 25% attempt suicide, 50% self-harm and 86% still hear homophobic remarks. These experiences can have a life-long negative impact on LGBT+ young people’s potential and wellbeing. And while young people are struggling, teachers and straight/cisgender students are rarely equipped with the information they need to support them. In the workplace, too, LGBT+ young people often lack the confidence to be themselves with 35% of 18-29 year old LGBT+ people not out to any colleagues.
At Woodkirk Academy we are committed to giving all our students the opportunity to get involved in such an important topic and will be sending a number of challenges to complete throughout the week.
