Woodkirk’s first Star Bakers are announced for Sport Relief

Fans of the great Bake Off were treated to a morning of enthusiastic baking. The much-loved Bake Off landed at Woodkirk Academy with gusto – but with a sporty, charitable twist. A mix of different aged students went head to head on Friday morning in the hope that they could earn the coveted crown of ‘star baker’, and to help raise lots of money for Sport Relief.

136 eager entrants, 8 finalists, 2 judges, tough competition and one pair of winners. The two judges: The Principal, Mrs Barton and Head of Year 7, Mr Lazarus were stunned by the quality of the 8 pairs of bakers. Mrs Barton told the contestants: “This is an amazing collection of bakes. You have worked extremely hard and this will be a difficult decision!” The bakers challenged themselves to produce a swimming pool cake, a football pitch cake, a trophy rice cake, a sport relief cupcake, an archery based chocolate cake, a sport relief themed cookie, a blue and white 4-story marble cake with royal icing for a badge on the top tier, and an athletics track on the bottom with icing models of famous runners and Sponge cake with a Checkerboard theme and Layer of Marzipan

After much deliberation and plenty of cake eating, the winners were chosen: Year 8 duo -Josh and Jérôme who produced a blue and white 4-story marble cake with an athletics track on the bottom (see below). They won the much-desired Bake Off Apron and a professionally made Skittles and Maltesers river cake made by one of Woodkirk’s maths’ teachers (Ms Mohmed).

In addition, following a successful bake sale at break time, nearly a hundred pounds was raised for Sport Relief. The day was fully organised by a Year 11 student, Nkosi.
